Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, who is the Commissioner for Education, made the announcement while briefing reporters in Gusau, the state capital. He explained that the affected schools were those that share borders with Katsina, Kaduna, and Sokoto States. The commissioner noted that the three states were prone to banditry, saying that the decision was important to forestall any form of attack on the schools.

The leader of Nigerian Islamic extremist group Boko Haram said Tuesday his group was behind the abduction of more than 300 boys from a school in the northwestern part of the country last week. The leader, Abubakar Shekau, said in an audio recording that Boko Haram was responsible for the abductions at the Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, in Katsina State on Friday. Boko Haram has previously attacked residents in the northeastern part of Nigeria and experts say the kidnapping marks a significant spread for the militant organization. [Shekau] wanted to make a big political statement that we are attacking you in the northeast, we are abducting your children in the northeast, and now we are doing it in the northwest, Bulama Bukarti, a Boko Haram specialist at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change in London, said.

Nigeria s Boko Haram jihadist rebels have claimed responsibility for the abduction of hundreds of students in one of the largest attacks in years on a boys school in northern Katsina state. More than 330 students are missing from the Government Science Secondary School in Kankara after gunmen with assault rifles attacked their school Friday night. Read more: The government and the attackers are negotiating over the fate of the boys, according to Nigerian presidential spokesman Garba Shehu. The kidnappers had made contact and discussions were already on, pertaining to the safety and return of the children to their homes, said Shehu on Twitter on Tuesday. He gave no information about the identity of the abductors.
