The schoolboys kidnapped from the Government Science Secondary School Kankara in the northwestern Katsina State were released by their captors. The students were kidnapped by Boko Haram insurgents on Dec. 11. Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed told a news conference in the nation s capital city Abuja that they were released unconditionally by their abductors. No money exchanged hands in the course of negotiation for the release of the boys, the minister told reporters, adding that the schoolboys secured their freedom without the exchange of suspected or convicted bandits in the custody of the government.

More than 300 schoolboys were missing for nearly a week, after an attack on the Government Science Secondary School Kankara in Katsina State. The Nigerian military late on Thursday rescued 344 of them, and they have been received at the state capital by governor Aminu Bello Masari, according to his spokesperson, Abdu Labaran. Boko Haram was not involved, he added, but rather the boys were kidnapped by bandits masquerading as the Islamist terrorist group. CNN has not been able to independently verify this.

According to him, “I welcome the release of the kidnapped students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara. This is a huge relief to the entire country & international community. The entire country is grateful to Governor Masari, the Intelligence Agencies, the Military and the Police Force”.

We rescued Kankara schoolboys, DHQ claims

Punch Newspapers Sections Adelani Adepegba, Abuja The Defence Headquarters has claimed that troops rescued the over 300 students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina, abducted by bandits on December 11. The DHQ spokesman, Maj. Gen. John Enenche, in a statement on Friday, said the military has kept its promises of ensuring the rescue of the hostages. Enenche’s claims, however, contradicted the statement by Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari that the students were released sequel to the negotiations with the bandits by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria leadership. The governor also claimed that no ransom was paid, noting that the hostages were voluntarily released by the bandits.
