(CNN) The mother of a Latino man who died in police custody in Alameda, California, after being restrained for about five minutes says her son asked the officers for help, but they didn t have compassion for him.
Mario Gonzalez Arenales died on April 19 after officers arrived at a local park, answering separate calls about a man who appeared to be intoxicated and a possible theft. Body camera footage released by police shows the 26-year-old was unresponsive after being pinned down by officers. I saw his last moments of life. I saw when he asked for help. to let him breath, his mother, Edith Arenales, said about the body camera footage.

California University Students, Employees Demand Removal Of Campus Police

At universities across California, students and workers refused to attend class or meetings, answer emails and clock into work Monday as part of a “day of refusal” organized by the group Cops Off Campus Coalition. The work stoppage began Abolition May, a series of actions grounded in a central demand: Remove police from all campuses.
Though the action was all-virtual due to the pandemic, 27 centers and departments in University of California schools and over 1,100 individuals throughout the nation signed a pledge to participate in the day of refusal.

DUBLIN, Calif. - Hector Hernandez Jr. died of pneumonia while incarcerated at Santa Rita Jail and his family believes he would still be alive if he’d been given the proper medical care.
He told me in Santa Rita if an inmate suffers something – an illness or an accident, whatever it is, it takes a long time for medical attention to arrive, said his father, Hector Hernandez Sr.

An Alameda County jury has convicted a man of murder in the brutal killing of a 21-year-old woman whose body was found in an Oakland park stabbed, bludgeoned and burned almost beyond recognition.
Prosecutors charged Curtys Taylor, of Oakland, and his girlfriend, Laura Rodgers, with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for meticulously planning the death of Karla Ramirez-Segoviano.
Rodgers, then 23, had asked Ramirez-Segoviano to pick her up on the night of Nov. 2, 2016, then talked her into driving to Arroyo Viejo Park in East Oakland, according to court filings. Police said the two women were friends.
