ACPS gears up for summer learning | Alexandria Times

Virtual learning will continue for the majority of Alexandria City Public Schools students during the Summer Learning for All program, which is scheduled to begin in July. An in-person instruction option will be available for certain prioritized groups of students. Summer learning for pre-K through eighth grade will run from July 6 to Aug. 12, and an additional virtual program for selected students will take place from Aug. 2 to 12. For high school students, the program will be offered from July 6 to 30. A Summer Learning Choice form gauging student participation that was sent out to parents May 11 closed on Monday and garnered more than 7,000 responses.

Candidate profile: Justin Wilson emphasizes pandemic recovery, infrastructure in re-election campaign | Alexandria Times

Justin Wilson would be the first to tell you that his term as mayor has not gone as planned. When Wilson was elected in 2018, after defeating former Mayor Allison Silberberg in the 2018 Democratic primary by 1,259 votes, he did so assuming that the biggest challenge he would have to face was the planned shutdown of the city’s Metro stations in summer 2019. “I think the good news is we handled the adversity of that well,” Wilson said. “… All of that was great, but then, obviously, there’s been a couple other things that have happened in the last two and a half years.”

Filling in the Blanks with Dr Gregory Hutchings, Ed D: Recognizing our ACPS Teachers | Alexandria Times

Dr. Gregory Hutchings Ed.D. (Photo Credit: Susan Hale Thomas/ACPS) This past week, we celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Week. It is more important than ever that we thank our teachers for continuing to provide our students with an innovative and rewarding educational experience while navigating teaching through the dual pandemic of COVID-19 and systemic racism. This school year has been, by far, one of the most turbulent years for those in the teaching profession. Almost overnight, teachers had to reimagine what teaching and learning would look like in a virtual environment. At the same time, they had to suddenly learn new technologies, find creative ways to engage with students and keep communication lines open with families. I have seen Alexandria City Public Schools teachers serve as lifelines for students for far more than schoolwork. Let us give teachers a virtual high-five and let them know we appreciate them.
