Daly: Mistake for GAA not to battle for elite status

GAA confident all competitions will be fully completed

Updated / Wednesday, 24 Feb 2021 13:00 Kilcummin and Killarney Legion in action during last season s Kerry club championship Outgoing GAA president John Horan has aired his confidence that the club championships, Allianz Leagues and All-Ireland championships will all be completed as long as training is allowed to resume in six weeks time. On Tuesday Taoiseach Micheál Martin announced the extension of Level 5 restrictions until 5 April, with the Government assessing whether it will be safe to then begin easing the restrictions, including on some sporting activities. The GAA are hopeful that inter-county activity will be permitted to start on 5 April, with a return to non-contact activity for juveniles also on the cards at that point. With at least four weeks pre-season training required, that would make an early May starting date for the Allianz Leagues possible.

Tánaiste says inter-county GAA may be permitted in April

The Tánaiste said Government Chief Whip Jack Chambers, who also has responsibility for sport, is working on the issue. Taoiseach Micheál Martin announced this week that Level 5 restrictions will be extended until April 5 at which there may be an easing of rules around outdoor activities and sport. Currently only elite sports are permitted under Level 5 which includes rugby, soccer and horse racing. The new Covid-19 plan ‘The Path Ahead’ says depending on transmission of the virus the Government will considered a “staggered start of easing of other areas of activity with a focus on outdoor activities including sport and some areas of construction” after April 5.
