“Australians send our love and deepest condolences to her Majesty and all the Royal family.
“The Commonwealth family joins together in sorrow and thanksgiving for the loss and life of Prince Philip,” Morrison wrote in a statement posted on Twitter.
“He embodied a generation that we will never see again,” the premier said.
The prince “was no stranger to Australia, having visited our country on more than 20 occasions,” the premier added.
“Through his service to the Commonwealth he presided as patron or president of nearly 50 organisations in Australia,” he said.
Morrison announced that flags in Australia would be lowered “in honour of His Royal Highness.”

The Duke of Edinburgh’s public image portrayed by certain parts of the media was “always an unfair depiction”, his youngest son the Earl of Wessex has said.
Prince Edward told ITV News his father had a “wonderful” sense of humour, but people could misinterpret things or “turn it against them”.

“He used to give them as good as he got and always in a very entertaining way.
“He was brilliant. Always absolutely brilliant.

The Duke of Edinburgh has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.
Prince Philip was the longest-serving consort in British history.
A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
“Further announcements will made in due course.
