CHENNAI, India In a bid to strengthen its diplomatic ties with Sri Lanka and maintain its presence in the Indian Ocean Region, India has abstained from voting on a resolution during the United Nations Human Rights Council’s 46th regular session in Geneva that aimed to probe further into the war crimes committed during the Sri Lankan civil war.
Sri Lanka witnessed an almost four-decade-long civil war (1983 to 2009) between the Tamil population, led by the Liberation of Tamil Tigers Eelam, and the Sinhalese government. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam sought to establish an independent state, Eelam, in northern and eastern Sri Lanka.

The Golden Celebration of Bangladesh’s independence, which began amidst Covid-19 pandemic on 17th March 2021 ended on 27th March 2021 with a big success. Those who attended the ten day programmes had to follow prescribed health protocols and, needless to say, though the number of invitees were limited to five hundred hardly on any day five hundred guests could attend the programmes due to the prescribed protocols, one being producing the Covid-19 ‘negative’ certificate. Those interested did not miss the programmes as they were telecast live on all TV channels. 17th March was the 101st Birth Day of the Father of the Nation and on this day virtually the Birth Centenary of the Bangabandhu was concluded. Initially all these programmes were planned to be big events but due to Covid-19 pandemic most of the programmes had to be curtailed and held virtually.

On April 1, 2021, the federal cabinet under Prime Minister Imran Khan rejected a proposal of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) also under Prime Minister Khan to import cotton yarn and sugar from India. The proposal was moved by Khan himself at the ECC in his role as caretaker commerce minister. A minister later said that the ECC proposal would be re-examined to see the kind of economic, political and institutional effect resuming formal relations with India would yield. This put an end to the “optimistic” expectation in Pakistan about “normalization” of relations between the neighboring states.
