Big American Gothic sculpture awaits RAGBRAI in Anamosa; cash sought

The sculpture, formally known as God Bless America, was the work of prolific American sculptor Seward Johnson. Johnson, who died last year, was best known for a very different kind of sculpture: life-sized bronzes of everyday people in everyday activities. The sculpture in Anamosa, is part of a later series based on iconic images. Many are what Seward called “monumental scale.” The series has been exhibited around the U.S. and the world. The series also includes monumental scale interpretations of Marilyn Monroe in the steam grate scene from The Seven Year Itch  and of “The Kiss,” based on the iconic photo of a sailor locking lips with a nurse in Times Square on VJ Day in 1945.

Heat doesn t get in the way during RAGBRAI s Day 4 route to Waterloo

It wasn t so bad, after all.  Trepidation surrounded Day 4 of the Register s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa as the National Weather Service forecast highs in the upper 90s and a heat index above 105. Fresh in the minds of riders was the long, brutal Day 1, when temperatures were not quite so high but there was a strong headwind, scarce water and unrelenting sunshine. But at 67.9 miles, Wednesday s route from Iowa Falls to Waterloo wasn t as lengthy. The temperature mounted throughout the day, but never got past the mid-90s. Overcast skies blocked the worst effects of the sun. And a steady tailwind helped riders sail along.
