Creating AI that makes the world a better place

May 27, 2021 How do you help an autistic person ‘see’ emotions? A major drawback for people with such conditions is that they struggle to connect their perception with their empathy. Most of us take it for granted that we can read another person’s emotions through subtleties such as body language, yet this is a real struggle for many others. Enter emotion AI. Researchers at Stanford University modified Google’s augmented reality glasses to read emotions in others and notify the wearer. The glasses detect someone’s mood through their eye contact, facial expressions and body language, and then tell the wearer what emotions it’s picking up. Stanford calls this the Autism Glass Project, but it’s telling that its users have dubbed them the Superpower Glass.

Hank Cetola: Systemic racism is real and all around us

Hank Cetola Systemic racism is a system in which institutional practices, public policies, cultural representations and other norms perpetuate racial group inequities. Part of what maintains systemic racism are the implicit biases that most, if not all, of us have. We are unaware that we have these biases, but they can be expressed in our behaviors; behaviors that contribute to systemic racism. It is different from individual racism in which an individual consciously and intentionally engages in prejudicial or discriminatory behavior. An implicit bias is unconscious and nonintentional, but it has effects. Here are some of them. After President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, the Republicans had Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., deliver their response. I find it ironic that they chose their token Black to deliver remarks which included much about racism including his statement that “America is not a racist country.” All he must do is look at his Republican caucus in the Senate

Paralyzed man used his thoughts to type words - the latest news

May 13, 2021 by archyde Researchers at Stanford University have successfully implemented a brain-computer interface capable of interpreting attempts at handwriting. The latest advancement in brain-computer interfaces (BCI) has converted a person’s thoughts on writing words into text. Using an artificial neural network, researchers at Stanford University in California successfully converted brain signals from a 65-year-old man paralyzed under the neck due to a spinal cord injury . Their BCI was faster than traditional head or eye tracking systems, which allow users to move the mouse cursor to type messages. A recent example is Neuralink’s study with Pager, a macaque that played Pong with its eyes.
