Sydneyâs COVID-19 outbreak will get worse before it gets better, warned NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, after the state recorded its highest daily caseload since April last year and a woman in her nineties became the first person to die from locally-acquired COVID this year.
Ms Berejiklian warned NSW residents to brace for âworse, much worseâ to come.
âIâll be shocked if itâs less than 100 this time tomorrow, of additional new casesâ warned the Premier, after the state announced 77 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 on Sunday.

âTomorrow and the few days afterwards will be worse, much worse than weâve seen today,â she said.

New South Wales has recorded 77 new local COVID-19 cases and one death as Greater Sydney enters its third week of lockdown.
A woman in her 90s from Sydney’s southwest, who was a close contact of a locally-acquired case and tested positive for the virus on Friday, died on Saturday at Liverpool Hospital.
“Tragically, we’ve seen one older person die and I want to extend my deepest condolences to their families and loved ones,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Sunday, noting the person had acquired the virus in their household.
Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said it s understood the woman was not vaccinated.
Professor Kelly said clinical trials show 12 weeks is the optimal time to wait between doses for long-term protection. That remains the national advice but Sydney is a different case.
“In Sydney right now, we need to weigh up immediate protection versus longer term protection, so the immediate protection that would come from earlier dose would make sense,” he said.

“Earlier gives you less protection longer term but it gives you better protection now.
“If you are in Sydney – only in Sydney – have a discussion with your GP to potentially bring that forward but that is a one-on-one discussion about that risk and benefit about that.”
