Fears Australian Qantas crew came into contact with Covid-infected Kiwi airport worker

The border worker from Auckland Airport tested positive for coronavirus on Tuesday.  Authorities from The Department of Health will work closely with Qantas in an attempt to identify aircrew - who have since flown to Victoria - that possibly were in contact with the infected worker. Management of the Victorian aircrew will depend on the outcome of each crew member s risk assessment, the department said in a statement on Thursday. Some crew will be asked to test and quarantine for 14 days, others will be asked to test and isolate until they get a negative result. NSW investigates possible hotel COVID-19 spread

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant says the investigation into the potential transmission event at the Mercure Hotel on George Street in Sydney is ongoing. “We have two different groups, an individual traveller and a family of two who travelled on the same plane on the same section of the plane,” she said. “We know their day two tests were negative so they both weren’t infectious when they had been travelling on that plane and we also know that there were no flight crew on that plane that were positive.” Dr Chant said NSW Health was not ruling out a common source in the Malaysian airport and said in-flight transmission was unlikely. “What we are concerned about is that there could have been transmission given that these two cases were adjacent to each other in the hotel.” Dr Chant said of the 40 people on the floor of the hotel, 36 had been contacted and NSW is looking for the other four.
