Popularly known as Dhing Express, Hima Das was recently appointed as deputy superintendent of police (DSP) by the Assam government as a recognition of her achievements in the field of sports. She is the first Indian woman and also the first-ever Indian athlete to win a gold medal in any format of a global track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships when she clocked a speed of 51.46 seconds.

GUWAHATI: Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sounded an alert saying that the COVID-19 situation across the State is turning critical with the numbers of both the positive cases and deaths increasing.
Sarma told reporters here on Tuesday that the situation would turn worse if the people do not become alert and adhere to the COVID-safety protocols. He also pointed out that the number of COVID-19 positive cases and deaths increased alarmingly since the last one week.
Meanwhile, the Kamrup Metropolitan district has recorded 11,652 positive cases during the last 10 days. On the other hand, the State registered 159 deaths due to COVID-19 infection in the last six days.

Guwahati: Assam s main city Guwahati is headed towards a critical situation as far as the COVID situation is concerned. The number of COVID cases in the city is rising at double the rate of the number of beds available. At this rate the city s government hospitals and COVID care centres would exhaust all hospital beds, state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Guwahati, May 5 : Amidst continuing uncertainty over who would be the next Assam Chief Minister, a top leader of the ruling BJP on Wednesday said that the government formation process would take a couple of days as the central leadership, including party President J.P. Nadda are busy in dealing with the post-poll violence in West Bengal.
The senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that the central leadership including Nadda, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and BJP s national Vice-President Baijayant Jay Panda are expected in Guwahati soon to decide the leader of the legislature party who will become the next Chief Minister.

The Assam Government has issued a fresh set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) in view of the rising cases of COVID-19 in the State. According to the State’s Health and Family Welfare Department, 29 people died on Monday and the positivity rate was 8.02%.
Night curfew
The new of SOPs issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said all shops and business establishments should close by 2 p.m. from Wednesday until further notice. Night curfew will also be enforced from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
An earlier SOP had sought closure of shops and business establishments by 6 p.m. with night curfew from 8 p.m.
