Lawrence Police Dedicate Monument to Officer Killed in 2005 Chase

(LAWRENCE, Ind.) – The Lawrence Police Department has unveiled a monument at its new headequarters, honoring the department’s only line-of-duty death. Craig Herbert died 16 years ago when a 15-year-old boy stole a van and led police on a 100-mile- an-hour chase before crashing into Herbert’s squad car. Lawrence Police included the memorial in plans for their new headquarters which opened last year. Chief David Hofmann says with the black granite monument’s dedication, the new building finally feels complete. Born in San Francisco, beloved son of Earl Ellison Sr. (deceased) & Maxine Ellison (deceased), brother of Earl Ellison Jr. (deceased) & Pauline Peck (deceased).  Duane lived most of his life in Palo Alto where his father Earl Ellison Sr. had opened a family business in 1929 that later came to be known as Ellison s Body Shop. Duane worked as a car detailer at the family business before becoming a full time Artist. He also worked briefly for the City of Palo Alto as a commercial artist.

Indianapolis police: Fallen officers honored during memorial service

Grief and grace.  Those two seemingly opposing forces co-existed inside Southport Presbyterian church Thursday as police officers and family members honored their fallen heroes.  There were tears, yes. But there was also hope and compassion. There was family.  The annual Peace Officers Memorial Service is hosted by the local Fraternal Order of Police, the union that represents officers across Marion County. It invites family of slain officers to come together and remember their loved ones.  For some, the grief was perhaps more raw than others. Tom and Jennifer Leath sat near the front of the room just over a year after their daughter, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Breann Leath, was killed in the line of duty.

The result wasn’t what either of the siblings expected. “I was arrested for conspiracy to commit assault and harassment,” she recalled. “I was fingerprinted. They took my mug shot. I was 13.” Frustrated by his teacher’s lack of support, Brian Lee Jr. had ended up punching the classmate. Brian was arrested, too. “I was fortunate,” Gabrielle said. “I have parents who were able to scrape money together and hire a very good attorney for me.” Her school district eventually dropped the charges. But the whole experience, as demeaning as it was, laid the groundwork for her deciding to study law and help others by becoming an attorney, herself.
