ALAN MBATHI / IPB NEWS Community members and elected officials came together Saturday to offer prayers and call for an end to violence during vigils honoring the victims of Indianapolis’ latest mass shooting. About 200 people attended a candlelight vigil at Krannert Park on Indianapolis’ westside Saturday evening. Eight candles were lit to represent each person killed late Thursday night when a former employee arrived at a FedEx facility and opened fire with two assault rifles. Ryenne Beaty is a childhood friend of 19-year-old Samaria Blackwell, who was among those who died. She said she did not believe the news at first.

Mourners held a vigil for the eight FedEx workers slain Thursday allegedly by a former co-worker  as Indianapolis reels from the nation’s latest mass shooting. About 50 people mourners attended the vigil at Olivet Missionary Baptist Church, according to The Indianapolis Star. Savana DeLao and Michelle Parks would have been working at the facility Thursday night under normal circumstances, but DeLao left work early, and Parks didn’t work her usual shift, claiming something didn’t feel right, according to the report. I was laughing, like ‘you guys have a good day. I’ll see you next week, DeLao reportedly said to her colleagues, as she punched out several hours before the massacre.

He said his sister-in-law began working at the FedEx facility in November and was a dedicated worker whose husband was disabled. She was a workaholic, she always was working, working, he said. She would never sit still . the other day she had the (COVID-19) shot and she was really sick, but she still went to work. In addition to Sekhon, the Marion County Coroner’s office identified the dead late Friday as: Matthew R. Alexander, 32; Samaria Blackwell, 19; Amarjeet Johal, 66; Jasvinder Kaur, 50; Jaswinder Singh, 68; Karli Smith, 19; and John Weisert, 74. Police said Brandon Scott Hole, 19, apparently began firing randomly at people in the parking lot of the FedEx facility, killing four, before entering the building, fatally shooting four more people and then turning the gun on himself. Several other people were wounded, including five who were taken to the hospital. Authorities have not publicly speculated on a motive.
