Highlights for Day 3:
Though Jamila Wignot s rapturous profile of dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey (1931-1989) spends less time on details of his life than may be wished for, it more than makes up for it on details of Ailey s work, including archival footage of Ailey as a dancer and choreographer; stunning performances of such pieces as his quintessential Revelations ; and energetic rehearsals of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, led by mentees who are pursuing Ailey s vision years after his death.
It also features interviews with numerous dancers and collaborators who were part of the revolutionary dance company, who speak to Ailey s gifts as a leader, and as an artist who found a way to blend the aesthetics of classical and modern dance with the sensibility of a young Black boy from Depression-era Texas who dreamed of becoming

“People come to YouTube as a place to learn and connect. This Black History Month we wanted to continue meeting this challenge which I believe has never been more important,”
Nadine Zylstra, YouTube Original’s head of learning, impact, kids, and families, said in a statement. “By choosing art as the lens to further explore Black history, we hope to inspire our audience to continue embracing Black culture in all its various forms.”
Black Renaissance is the latest original to be produced using the $100 million
Othella Dallas, who was one of the last surviving early members of the Katherine Dunham Dance Company, the nation’s first self-supporting Black modern dance troupe, and taught the Afro-Caribbean-influenced Dunham technique in Europe well into her 90s, died on Nov. 28 at a nursing home in Binningen, Switzerland. She was 95.
Her son, Peter Wydler, said the cause was lung cancer.
The sound of conga drums reverberated at Ms. Dallas’s studio in Basel, Switzerland, for years as she gyrated to their rhythm. Her students watched reverently, eager to learn from a woman who had learned from Dunham, the matriarch of Black dance, who died in 2006.

YouTube Originals has announced
Black Renaissance, a new special on Friday, February 26, that will feature President and Mrs. Obama, Jason Reynolds, Killer Mike, Desus Nice & The Kid Mero, Jemele Hill, artist Shantell Martin, and a performance by Tobe Nwigwe.
The new special will be available on the YouTube Originals Channel and will showcase Black creators, artists, writers, storytellers, and history makers who have shaped our nation’s history; and the next generation of Black voices who are reimagining our future. The special will include dance, music, fashion, photography, literature, Afrofuturism, and the art of Black Women and LGBTQ+ artists.
