Unemployment union launches campaign for $80 a day, rejects JobSeeker cut

“The slashed $615 per fortnight JobSeeker rate announced today [will] … trap 1.4 million people and their kids almost 50% below the poverty line.  “This is not a raise; it is a cut,” O’Connell continued, adding that it will “entrench poverty and lock people out of work for years or decades, as we have seen in every past recession”. O Connell warned of the impact of cuts on peoples’ mental health. “We don’t believe the government should force anyone to live in poverty and we know the vast majority agrees with us. “There are not enough jobs. Instead of handing billions of dollars to private organisations who bully, threaten and harass us, the government should be caring for people who are locked out of work,” O’Connell said, referring to the job providers who will be given more power to harass unemployed people.

Keeping the common good after COVID

Keeping the common good after COVID     At a press conference once, I revealed that my Mum raised me in three great faiths: the Catholic Church, the Australian Labor Party, and the South Sydney Rabbitohs. They all played roles in my childhood, each one of them in separate ways. Each brought a different strength that I was able to call on as I was growing up. And in different ways, I needed them all. I grew up in public housing, raised by a single mother on the disability pension. Mum was crippled by rheumatoid arthritis, and I still think about how hard things must have been for her. And yet she shone so brightly in my life. She was a strong woman with a sharp mind and the biggest heart. I saw in her the most profound inner strength. Through her own example, she taught me love and compassion. As we made our way together in life, I learnt about community and the power of pulling together.
