Stay At Home Measures Likely To Extend To June

Christine Elliott-CPAC screengrab It was originally scheduled to end May 20. The new end date is now projected to be June 2. Health Minister Christine Elliott says medical experts are telling the government to stay the course with current pandemic restrictions until COVID-19 cases experience a significant decline. Premier Doug Ford implemented the stay-at-home order on April 8 over concern with the increasing case numbers and high hospitalization rates. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has an active case count of 40. The Northwestern Health Unit heads into Tuesday with 51 active cases. A total of 2,716 new cases were reported in Ontario on Monday. That is the lowest daily count in the province in nearly six weeks.

Seven new COVID cases in the Thunder Bay district

One of the cases involves an individual who had travelled outside Northwestern Ontario. Four of the cases are in district communities, and three are in the City of Thunder Bay or immediate surrounding townships. The TBDHU also reported that it has identified four more cases caused by COVID-19 Variants of Concern. With four previous infections being resolved, the number of active COVID-19 cases in the TBDHU s coverage area has risen to 40, three more than on Saturday when the health unit issued its last report. Four patients are receiving treatment in hospital, including one in the intensive care unit at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Details expected this week on possible regional reopening of schools

THUNDER BAY - Local school boards could learn more this week on any possibilities for a regional reopening of schools across the province, but given the state of the pandemic, one local education official is not overly hopeful. Ian MacRae, director of education with the Lakehead Public School Board, said he anticipates hearing from the province this week as to whether it will be looking at a regional approach to reopening schools before the end of the academic year. “If they do that, we would be candidates for that, but there will be a lot of discussions prior to that,” he said. “Certainly with the variants of concerns and all the different variables, we are not particularly hopeful.”

Regional COVID Numbers On The Decline

There are no more active COVID cases in the Dryden area. The only case on the Northwestern Health Unit list has been removed. The number of cases currently on the go across the region is now down to 51. The Sioux Lookout Health Hub leads the way with 29, 18 are in the Kenora area, 3 in Fort Frances and one in Emo. Another number that has also gone down is the test positivity rate, which now sits at 1.04% since the start of the pandemic.
