The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) said four of the cases are from close contact, and one was the result of travel outside of the region. Just one of the cases is in Thunder Bay, while the other four are in district communities. The Geraldton District Hospital posted on its Facebook page it had four new cases in its service area.

Nine new variant cases detected, active case count remains at 45

THUNDER BAY The Thunder Bay District Health Unit continues to see growing numbers of COVID-19 cases considered to be variants of concern.  On Thursday nine previously announced cases were determined to be variant cases, bringing the total number in the district to 50 since the first batch of cases were detected a month ago.  The health unit also announced five new cases on Thursday, which leaves the region s active case count at 45, the same as on Wednesday. The region s seven-day, per-100,000 rate is 22.01, which is the lowest it s been since Jan. 2. It s also the sixth straight reporting day the health unit has reported single-digit cases.

All five cases are the result of close contact, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) said, and all five are in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas. Four cases were also listed as resolved. As of Wednesday morning, there were 45 confirmed, active cases of the virus in the district.

The waiting game continues for those who enjoy recreational activities in Ontario. Mayor Bill Mauro says it’s a mistake that the province won’t reopen golf courses, ball diamonds, soccer pitches and tennis courts. “I think we’re the only jurisdiction in North America that’s not allowing it, as was the case with ski hills,” Mauro noted. “I think people continue to be a bit surprised by that decision and frankly not quite understanding that decision.” Health Minister Christine Elliott has indicated that medical experts are telling the government that we need to see a continued reduction in COVID-19 cases before more amenities could open.
