THUNDER BAY – Dilico Anishnabek Family Care has hit a vaccine milestone, handing out its 10,000th COVID-19 shot.
“I am really proud of the hard work our Health department has done in supporting First Nation Communities. We have an outstanding team of accredited professionals that have provided thorough advocacy, ensured clinic logistics run smoothly, and directly provided the vaccinations,” said executive director Darcia Borg, in a release issued on Thursday.
Additionally, all First Nation’s within Dilico’s jurisdictions have received first doses of the vaccine, though work continues, in conjunction with both the Northwest Health Unit and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit to ensure as many Indigenous persons as possible are vaccinated.
11 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 are being reported Friday morning by the Northwestern Health Unit.
Six are from the Fort Frances health hub, three from the Kenora area and one each from the Dryden and Sioux Lookout regions.
The NWHU says that there are now 71 active cases of the novel coronavirus in their catchment area, up from the 66 reported on Thursday.
The Kenora region still leads the way with 31 active cases, followed by the Fort Frances health hub with 19.
The regional health authority tells us there is good news going into the weekend as the number of hospitalizations is down from five on Thursday to three on Friday.
SCHREIBER, Ont. – A public health investigation is ongoing after two staff with Canadian Pacific who work on the railway east of the Schreiber and Terrace Bay area tested positive for COVID-19.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit declared an outbreak among CP staff in the area Friday, the second time it’s done so this month.
The two infected workers are in isolation, the health unit said.
The agency is working with company management and the Algoma and Sudbury health units to identify close contacts. All of those identified so far are also self-isolating, it said.
“We are working with Canadian Pacific management to implement enhanced COVID-19 prevention measures to control the outbreak,” the health unit said.

There is just one new COVID-19 case being reported today.
There are five cases that are considered resolved with the active case count sitting at 63.
