Regular meeting, Feb. 22
KEY ACTION The Northwestern Local School District Board of Education approved staff layoffs for the 2021-22 school year, but intends at its March 15 meeting to reinstate some of the positions using federal grant dollars instead of general fund operating money. Superintendent Jeffrey Layton also announced paying off district buildings in April – three years early.
KEY DISCUSSION The board approved the following positions to be RIF d (reduced in force or cut) for the 2021-22 school year: high school Spanish teacher/tutor, middle school technology teacher, middle school health and physical education teacher, high school paraprofessional aide, part-time secretary, one-fourth high school intervention specialist, one-fourth high school computer science, elementary/high school custodian, two elementary school paraprofessional aides, two middle school paraprofessional aides, a bus driver, and a middle school ISS paraprofessional aide.
These students will be taking classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Second- through fifth-graders will return April 13, Mondays and Fridays.
The return date for grades six through 12 will be determined by the district based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations.
School district Chief Executive Officer Justin Jennings said he believes this is the safest course.
“As I’ve said since the beginning of the pandemic, the safety of our scholars, families, teachers, staff and the community is the most important thing,” he said. “We have always based our decisions on information from health and science professionals. We will continue to do so to ensure the safety of our scholars, staff and community.”
