Three Lemmon Valley residents awarded $1 1 million over 2017 flooding

The city of Reno was ordered Monday morning to pay $1.1 million to the owners of three Lemmon Valley homes in a lawsuit over the flooding of their properties in 2017.  The Swan Lake Basin flooded nearby homes in 2017 after the city of Reno pumped or diverted excess stormwater into Swan Lake Basin. More than 60 homes were damaged. Dozens of residents later filed a class-action lawsuit against the city. On Monday, Second Judicial District Court Judge Barry Breslow ordered the city to make the payment by 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to Roger Doyle, the residents attorney. Approximately $931,000 was awarded for damages plus interest from the past four years that the residents have been battling the city in court, Doyle said. An additional $231,000 was awarded for the cost of expert witnesses.

Lemmon Valley residents take Reno to federal court for Swan Lake flood

Dozens of Lemmon Valley residents involved in a years-long legal battle with the city of Reno over the flooding of their homes in 2017 are moving to federal court in a complex case that could cost the city millions of dollars. In 2019, residents who filed a class action lawsuit in Washoe County District Court, won a jury verdict that determined the city was responsible for the dramatic flooding that left some homes underwater for years. Shortly afterward, however, Judge Barry Breslow decertified the class, meaning each of the 26 plaintiffs must argue individually for damages. Their lawyer, Roger Doyle, opted to take those cases to federal court in February, which is the traditional jurisdiction for civil rights lawsuits.

Courts grant more than 200 criminal expungements thanks to new state law

Created: February 01, 2021 09:30 PM ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  Hundreds of New Mexicans had their criminal records wiped clean last year thanks to the Criminal Expungement Act.  In the first full year under the law, the courts granted 212 expungements all across the state. In Bernalillo County, there have been 102 expungements granted to date.  In our district we ve seen about 260 petitions filed, said Josh Allison, 2nd Judicial District Court Judge. We expected double, triple, even quadruple that number and we just haven t seen those figures, said Judge Allison. I think it s just people don t know about it. And I think that s probably the large part we did see a dip in cases when the public health emergency initially started, but now we re back ramping back up to where we were pre-pandemic statewide. So I don t think that s the cause I think it s likely people just don t know about it.

Lawsuit: New Mexico attorney general accuses recruitment agency of exploiting foreigner teachers

Lawsuit: New Mexico attorney general accuses recruitment agency of exploiting foreigner teachers Miranda Cyr, Las Cruces Sun-News LAS CRUCES – When Ma. Eden Dagsaan, 52, started the process of emigrating from the Philippines to New Mexico through Total Teaching Solutions International to teach in public schools, she thought it was too good to be true. I was skeptical, Dagsaan said.  Is it really true that I could go to America? Once she stepped off her flight into Roswell, New Mexico on Sept. 11, 2017, the TTSI staff, who reportedly picked up her and fellow Filipino teachers after all other passengers were gone from the baggage claim, they immediately asked for the requested payment of $500 to go toward the $15,000 sum she owed to the company.
