Illinois AG, FBI form unemployment fraud task force

FBI, state team up to battle unemployment fraud

Raoul and other officials have been complaining for months about fraudulent claims for benefits filed with the Illinois Department of Employment Security. His office didn’t immediately have a reply to how far any investigations have proceeded. But there are indications that sophisticated hacking operations are behind the claims, and the number now has risen to more than 350,000, according to the state. The fraud “can likely be attributed to large corporate data breaches and is not the result of any state system breaches,” said a joint statement from Raoul and the FBI. “These breaches compromised personal information including Social Security numbers, drivers’ license numbers, names, dates of birth, credit card numbers and addresses” enough to allow an impostor to file for a check.
