VCO clinical trials still ongoing – DOST – Manila Bulletin

(PIXABAY / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) “The screening and recruitment for study participants are still ongoing,” DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said during his weekly report on Friday, April 9, citing the report provided by the DOST-Philippine Council for Research and Development (PCHRD) on the latest development of various coronavirus disease (COVID-19) ongoing research and development (R&D) projects that are being implemented by its partner research institutions. He said out of 549 screened patients, the project team has enrolled 28 patients to the study.  “Thirteen of the enrolled patients are under the VCO and standard care intervention while 15 are receiving the standard care only,” the DOST chief said. 

DOST launches supplementary food feeding program in Tarlac

(FACEBOOK/MANILA BULLETIN) The DOST III launched the feeding program to address the nutritional problems of pre-school children in Ramos, Tarlac, DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said.  “The feeding program is being undertaken in several municipalities in the region under the agency’s Expanded Implementation of Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (eCEST) Program and is aimed at improving the nutritional status of undernourished children,” he said in a report.  He said the beneficiaries were given a package of nutritious brown rice and veggie noodles made from vegetables such as squash and malunggay.  The recipients, which were identified through the Operation Timbang Plus 2020 conducted by the Rural Health Unit of Ramos, come from Barangays Guiteb, Pance, and Toledo.

The potential buyer, the NutriDense Food Manufacturing Corporation (NFMC), is a research-based food manufacturer. NFMC touched base with the farmers during a virtual meeting organized by DAR. NFMC has partnered with the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) in the past to help eradicate malnutrition. Based in Sta. Barbara town in Pangasinan, NFMC is also one of the country’s accredited producers of the eNutribun, which contains squash and sweet potato. Through its Linking Smallholder Farmers to Markets and Microfinance (LinkSFarMM) program, DAR is able to equip agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) with agri-entrepreneurial knowledge and directly connects them to buyers who are interested in buying specific products.
