In a break from my normal analytic material about Israel and the Middle East, I’m going to report on something personal. Not too long ago, my dad, Cecil Davis, passed away and is with the Lord, and after 70 years of marriage to my mom, is now once again joined with her – in spirit.
Ohio Tuskegee Airmen Day will be commemorated for the first time March 29.
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American fighter pilots to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Overcoming the great barriers of segregation and discrimination, they became one of the best fighting groups in the history of World War II.
Many years ago, my wife and I had the privilege of befriending a Tuskegee Airman, Major Herndon “Don” Cummings. Major Cummings was exceptional in personality and ability to weave engrossing recounts of his experiences during the war. We met Major Cummings when we joined a team to help with the maintenance and refurbishment of his home with a program known as Rebuilding Together. Throughout the day while we were painting, we learned about the Tuskegee Airmen.

1778 – The Liberty Bell is returned to Philadelphia from Northampton Town (now Allentown) where it is hidden until after the British depart following the Revolutionary War.
1833 – Prudence Crandall, a white woman, is arrested for conducting an academy for black females at Canterbury, Connecticut.
1893 – The New York stock market crashes. By the end of the year 600 banks and 74 railroads have gone out of business. This is why the period of time following the stock market crash of 1929 is called the “Great” Depression.
1922 – The first Newbery Medal for the year’s best children’s book is presented to Hendrik Van Loon for “The Story of Mankind.” The award is named for the eighteenth-century English bookseller John Newbery.

Germany and the America First movement
After a six-month stay in Britain, the Lindberghs traveled to Germany, where they were treated as honoured guests of the Third Reich. Charles visited centres of military aviation, where he assessed the pace of Germany’s rearmament, while Anne was fêted in Berlin. Lindbergh praised the Luftwaffe’s fighter and bomber designs, and he asserted that “Europe, and the entire world, is fortunate that a Nazi Germany lies, at present, between Communistic Russia and a demoralized France.” Lindbergh viewed the Soviet Union as the paramount threat to Western civilization, and his belief in the supremacy of airpower led him to conclude that Britain and France were effectively prostrate before the growing might of the Luftwaffe.
