Veterans Spotlight — US Army Air Corps 1st Lt Ben Ennenberg

Ben Ennenberg, 96, grew up in Lexington. He served his country as a 1st lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. Lieutenant Ennenberg has possessed a great affinity for planes since he was a youngster. “I had the best goddamn eyesight in my whole neighborhood…in school too,” he said. In the summer of 1942, the Army announced that it needed aircrew members. After entering military service he was sent to the Cadet Classification Center and assigned to Maxwell Field in Alabama. After graduating preflight school he was sent to flight training school. After nine weeks of training Lt. Ennenberg was given his first assignment as a navigator with the 8th Air Force, where his mission brought him to a Royal Air Force Base in London. He said the average life of an airman in the 8th Air Force during the war was an astounding 13 missions. The average age of a crewman was 21, while the average age of a flight officer was 23.

Tuskegee Airmen Former Lt. Col. Theodore Lumpkin Jr., a member of the Tuskegee Airmen who helped pave the way for desegregation in the military after World War II, died Dec. 26, following complications tied to COVID-19. He was 100. Although known for its pilots, Lumpkin’s eyesight kept him out of the cockpit. Instead, he served as an intelligence officer who briefed pilots on their missions. History remembers the all-Black unit for their pilots, however, the name also applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks and other support personnel, like Lumpkin. Born in 1919, Lumpkin, a lifelong Californian, was the oldest of six. He received an associate’s degree in mathematics from the Los Angeles City College in 1940, then continued his education at the University of California, Los Angeles, according to his bio.
