3 West Virginia students named Presidential Scholars

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) Three high school students from West Virginia have been named 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars, officials said.
Kendra Goeddert from Greenbrier East High School, Nicholas Murphy from Parkersburg South High School and Zara Zervos from John Marshall High School were among 161 high school students across the nation recognized for their accomplishments, U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona said in a statement Thursday.
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects scholars annually. Students are chosen based on academics, artistic ability, technical excellence, essays, school evaluations, leadership, community service and a commitment to high ideals.
Two Louisiana students have garnered national attention for their educational achievements.
A Thursday morning news release from the U.S. Department of Education announced that Louisiana-based students, Ju-Woo Nho of Baton Rouge Magnet High School and Eric Jaron Jones of Destrehan High School are among the 161 high school seniors who comprise the 57th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars.
U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona had the privilege of making this announcement, Thursday. The high school seniors are being honored for their success in academics, the arts and career and technical education fields.
Dr. Cardona said, “The 2021 Presidential Scholars represent extraordinary achievements for our extraordinary times.
2 Idaho high school seniors honored as 2021 Presidential Scholars
BOISE, Idaho (KIFI) – Students from Moscow and Nampa have been named U.S. Presidential Scholars for 2021, Superintendent of Public Instruction Sherri Ybarra announced Thursday.
“Congratulations to Jaston B. McClure of Moscow High School and Katherine E. Hebdon of Skyview High, who have been selected among 161 high school seniors nationwide for the 57
th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars,” Superintendent Ybarra said. “I’m proud to have these outstanding young Idahoans representing their schools, their communities and our state on the national stage.”

TRUMBULL, CT Rachel S. Brooks, of Trumbull and a senior at Christian Heritage School, was named a 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholar, one of two Connecticut students to receive the prestigious honor, according to Gov. Ned Lamont and Connecticut Acting Commissioner of Education Charlene Russell-Tucker.
U.S. Presidential Scholars are recognized for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields, and it is considered one of the nation s highest honors for graduating high school seniors.
The other Connecticut recipient is Greenwich High School senior Colin B. Speaker.
