LOS ANGELES A collision between a semitruck and an SUV near the U.S.-Mexico border Tuesday morning has left at least 13 dead and several others injured, officials said.
Twenty-seven people were in the SUV that struck a tractor trailer hauling gravel, said Judy Cruz, director of the El Centro Regional Medical Center emergency department. Twelve people died at the scene. One more died at El Centro Regional Medical Center, where six others are being treated. At least five have been flown from the scene to other treatment centers, she said. Authorities originally stated that 14 people died at the scene, but police later changed that number to 12.

A collision between a big rig and an SUV carrying more than two dozen people near the U.S.-Mexico border Tuesday morning killed at least 13 and injured several others, officials said.
Both the number of people traveling in the SUV and the number of victims were unclear. Judy Cruz, the emergency department director at El Centro Regional Medical Center, said 28 people were in the vehicle.
But Arturo Platero, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol’s El Centro office, said there were 25 people inside the Ford Expedition SUV, which is built for seven or eight travelers. He said the vehicle was carrying at least one teenager.
HOLTVILLE, Calif. At least 13 people died after an SUV packed with dozens of passengers collided with a semitruck near the U.S.-Mexico border Tuesday, according to California Highway Patrol officials.
California Highway Patrol Division Chief Omar Watson said the crash involved a big rig hauling two trailers and a Ford Expedition carrying 25 people. The big rig smashed into the side of the SUV before 6:15 a.m. PST at the intersection of State Route 115 and Norrish Road near Holtville, about 50 miles west of Arizona and 10 miles north of the border.
Authorities, late Tuesday, said they are investigating whether human smuggling was involved.
