UPLINK to digitize history of the Upper Peninsula | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 29, 2021 MARQUETTE  Northern Michigan University has received a $100,000 grant to launch UPLINK, a collaborative, regional digital network that will enable Upper Peninsula heritage organizations to preserve historical manuscript collections and offer online public access. The two-year project is being supported by a National Archives’ National Historical Publications and Records Commission implementation grant. NMU will be the home base for the project archivist. It will also serve as the principal service hub among three in the region capable of converting photographs, text and analog audio-visual media to a digital format. “The U.P. supplied much of the mineral and timber resources that fueled industrialization in the United States during the latter half of the 19th century and through much of the 20th,” said NMU Archivist Marcus Robyns, who initiated the effort. “Despite this important past, the U.P. has struggled to identify, collect and preserve its documentar

Winter birding round up - where to go and what to see in the Eastern U P - January 2021

Winter birding round up - where to go and what to see in the Eastern U.P. - January 2021 Extension educator Elliot Nelson dishes on the best places to see winter birds in the Eastern U.P. Pine Grosbeaks are being found at almost every bird feeder in the Eastern Upper Peninsula and area with fruit trees or conifers this winter. Photo: Elliot Nelson | Michigan Sea Grant Welcome to this edition of the Eastern UP Winter Birding Round Up. I’ve been busy between work and home life, but still have had a chance to get out and bird this winter as well as glean what’s happening in the area from personal conversations, Facebook, eBird, emails and more. Birding is both a personal interest of mine, and a service I provide on behalf of Michigan Sea Grant, and as an Extension educator with Michigan State University. A reminder, most locations mentioned are found on the EUP Winter Birding Map at www.northhuronbirding.com.

Grant will help Michigan groups preserve UP history in a digital way

Grant will help Michigan groups preserve UP history in a digital way Universities, heritage groups to document heritage on digital network Associated Press Tags:  MARQUETTE, Mich. – History in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is going digital. A $100,000 federal grant will help create UPLINK, a digital network that will allow U.P. heritage groups to preserve collections and offer public access, The Mining Journal reported. “The U.P. has struggled to identify, collect and preserve its documentary heritage,” said Marcus Robyns, archivist at Northern Michigan University. “Most museums, archives and libraries are not well funded and short-staffed, primarily with volunteers. “This has resulted in considerable challenges for preservation and access to important historical records, making digitization projects nearly impossible,” Robyns said.
