Mr Ungaro called for the extension of home quarantine to unvaccinated travellers who are travelling in an emergency. He said the €1,875 (£1,614) cost of staying in a hotel was creating “huge financial distress”. The European Commission last week questioned why some travellers from some EU countries were required to spend quarantine in a hotel and others were not. “The Commission is looking into these measures as there are some concerns in relation to the general principles of EU law, particularly proportionality and non-discrimination,” EU Commission spokesman Christian Wigand said.

REUTERS/Fabrizio Bensch/Pool DUBLIN (Reuters) - Travellers to Ireland from more European Union countries will be subjected to mandatory hotel quarantine in the coming days in an attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19 variants, Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said on Thursday. The government last week added 26 countries to the list of arrivals who must spend up to 14 days in a hotel room but stopped short of a recommendation by health officials to include the United States, Germany, Italy and France, countries where large numbers of Irish nationals live.
