The first quarter of 2021 ended with much optimism, as the Sudanese government and the SPLN-N El Hilu signed a in Juba, however it has been a turbulent three months economically. The adjustment of the exchange rate of the Sudanese Pound (SDG) to reflect the parallel market value has caused consumer prices to fluctuate, and done little to alleviate commodity and medicine shortages. However Sudan’s opened the door to $2 billion in grants for development, which offers hope for the future.
The beginning of 2021 has been marked by escalating tensions with Ethiopia. Several rounds of talks between Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia on the planned filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) have resulted in a deadlock. Ethiopian refugees continue arrive in Sudan fleeing internal strife, especially in the Tigray area, and Khartoum.

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the UN, showed his hope that the Sudanese Government would intensify efforts to ensure its leading role in protecting civilians and handling the root cause of violence
among communities in Darfur while addressing an online informal interactive dialogue on the Darfur situation on April 14.
Quy appreciated positive progresses in Sudan in the recent past and said he hopes the transitional government and relevant parties there will keep fully carrying out the peace deal on October 3, 2020.

DOZENS KILLED DURING INTER-COMMUNAL CLASHES IN WEST DARFUR
At least 87 people have been killed and 191 injured since violence broke out between the Arab Rizeigat and Masalit communities on Saturday, 3 April, around the city of El Geneina in West Darfur, Sudan. Members of both communities mobilized local militias after two members of the Masalit community were killed by unidentified armed men. Heavy weaponry and rocket-propelled grenades were reportedly used, hitting a hospital and a UN compound. A local power station has been destroyed and there is currently no electricity in the area. According to the UN, 108,000 internally displaced people residing in the Krinding camps in West Darfur were also forced to flee because of the violence.

The head of the new UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan, Volker Perthes, told the UN Security Council (UNSC) in a virtual briefing yesterday that that while Sudan is making significant advances in its transition “the remaining challenges are staggering”. He urges the international community to step up their assistance to Sudan: “it is urgent to respond to the needs of communities across the country”.
