Highlights from April 15 Oswego County Legislature meeting

OSWEGO — Through a bit of bureaucratic maneuvering, the County Legislature at its April 15 meeting was able to preserve most of the state funding the county was expecting for a program geared to families at risk for child maltreatment. In May 2019, the state Office for Children and Families Services awarded a five-year grant to expand Healthy Families Oswego County, an evidence-based, intensive home visiting program for such families. According to the legislature, this program has been proven to show reductions in harsh parenting, neglect, physical abuse, and psychological abuse. It also shows increased use of non-violent discipline, and improved children’s school performance and birth outcomes, including low birth weight.

Wednesday update: Oswego County virus cases up 26 to 7,652

OSWEGO — Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang announced Wednesday, April 28, that 26 additional residents tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the total cumulative number of positive cases since the county began monitoring for COVID-19 in March 2020 to 7,652. There are currently 221 active positive cases. “Over the last several days, our county has fluctuated between the CDC’s ‘high’ and ‘significant’ community transmission levels,” Huang said. “As of today, we remain at a ‘significant’ level. This shows us that we need to keep working to reduce virus transmission in our communities.” He urged eligible people to get vaccinated and reminded residents to follow COVID-19 protocols. “Wearing a mask, maintaining social distance and washing your hands frequently are the best ways to help prevent the spread of the virus and reduce the number of positive cases.”

Thursday update: Oswego County virus cases up 23 to 7,675

OSWEGO — Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang announced Thursday, April 29, that 23 additional residents tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the total cumulative number of positive cases since the county began monitoring for COVID-19 in March 2020 to 7,675. There are currently 226 active positive cases. “Oswego County remains at a ‘substantial’ community transmission level according to the CDC,” Huang said. “This shows us that the virus is still quite active in our communities. We must all work together to try to prevent further spread of the virus and reduce the number of positive cases. “Now is not the time to scale back our preventative measures,” he added. “Please, wear a mask. Maintain social distance and wash your hands frequently. If you are sick, stay home. If your children are sick, please keep them home.”

Tuesday update: Oswego County virus cases up 40 to 7,626

OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang announced Tuesday, April 27, that 40 additional residents tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the total cumulative number of positive cases since the county began monitoring for COVID-19 in March 2020 to 7,626. There are currently 212 active positive cases. “Although nearly 40% of our residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine and the seven-day accumulated positive case counts are at the lowest point in the last six weeks, we continue to fluctuate between the CDC’s ‘high’ and ‘significant’ community transmission levels,” Huang said. “In addition, today’s new case count is 40, the highest in the last five weeks. These things show us that, while we’ve made some progress, we need to keep working on reducing transmission in our communities.”
