Trees on farms for biodiversity in Peru

Incorporating trees into farms can enhance biodiversity and strengthen the sustainability of agriculture: a message increasingly shared among government ministries in Peru. The country is a signatory to the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and must report on progress in meeting targets for both. Peru’s Biodiversity Strategic Plan, a requirement under the Convention on Biological Diversity, includes efforts to achieve Aichi Target 7: ‘By 2020, areas under agriculture, aquaculture and forestry will be sustainably managed, ensuring the conservation of biological diversity’. However, the Plan pays no attention to trees in the agricultural matrix nor their contribution to biodiversity. Moreover, non-forest trees in these productive areas are ‘invisible’, that is, they are not counted in important national assessments, such as the National Forest Inventory and the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory.

Biden pledges to halve US carbon emissions by 2030, sending signal to businesses

First published on Dive Brief: The United States will work to cut economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by up to 52% by 2030 relative to 2005 levels, President Joe Biden announced on Thursday ahead of an Earth Day climate summit with other world leaders. The goal advances previous targets set by President Barack Obama, to reduce emissions up to 28% below 2005 levels by 2025. Since taking office, Biden has also rejoined the Paris climate accord, which President Donald Trump abandoned, and has advanced a jobs and infrastructure plan that hinges on eliminating economy-wide carbon emissions by 2050. S&P Global said utilities have a relatively clear path to decarbonization, through renewables and storage, and warned there are risks to the global economy should efforts to address climate risks fail.

The U S Will help Developing Countries Fight Climate Change

99 Climate aqctivists have been pressuring the Biden administration to enact real climate change laws. Image: Twitter/@@AndyVermaut Reuters -The United States said Thursday it would boost public climate finance to help poor countries reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change, doubling funding by 2024 from high average levels hit during the Obama administration. The White House said it was embracing “ambitious but attainable goals” for international aid to developing countries, given the urgency of climate change and to compensate for a sharp drop in U.S. funding during the Trump administration. The White House said that by 2024 it would triple financing of climate adaptation, which focuses on adjustments to current or expected climate change. It said it would work with Congress to enact needed legislation.
