Assam recorded up to 63.04 per cent turnout till around 3 pm today, eight hours into polling, as phase-II voting for the state Assembly election took off. This was considerably less than the 82.7 per cent clocked by this time in 2016. Voting began slow, possibly due to the heavy overnight rains, but turned brisk as the day unfolded.
Up to 345 candidates, including four sitting ministers and the deputy speaker, are contesting today in 39 seats comprising 73.4 lakh people and 10,000 polling stations. The ruling BJP and its allies, who had swept this phase last time, are contesting in 34 of the seats, while the opposition Congress is going for 28, leaving the rest

New Delhi [India], April 1 (ANI): Polling for the second and penultimate phase of Assam assembly polls began at 7 am on Thursday to decide the fate of 345 candidates in 39 constituencies across 13 districts.
The high-octane poll campaign for the second phase ended on Tuesday with all the players including the ruling NDA, Congress-led Mahajath making hard efforts to woo voters. The polling began at 7 am.
The main contest is seen to be between the alliances led by BJP and Congress.
The BJP-led alliance also includes the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People s Party Liberal (UPPL).
Polling is underway in Assam for the second phase of assembly elections and COVID-19 safety protocols are being followed at various polling booths. At a polling centre in Nagaon voters are being screened with a temperature gun when they arrive at the polling booths. The voters are also being provided hand gloves and sanitisers. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president JP Nadda on Thursday appealed to the voters to exercise their right to vote in record numbers in the second phase of assembly elections and to follow COVID-19 norms. Today is the second round of voting for the Assam assembly elections. I request all voters to cast their vote and participate in this festival of democracy.
