ShakeAlert, an earthquake early-warning system, will be active in Oregon next month, giving crucial seconds of advance warning to allow people and systems to take action from destructive shaking and possible tsunami.
The system, which delivers alerts to wireless devices such as cell phones through the Wireless Emergency Alert system, apps and other technologies, will begin at 10 a.m. March 11, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management announced Thursday.
What does it do?
When the network of seismic sensors across California, Oregon and Washington detect shaking, ShakeAlert issues a message containing information about the estimated magnitude and area of shaking caused by the quake.
ShakeAlert will warn of earthquakes March 11 2021
A new ShakeAlert notification system for earthquakes is going live in Oregon on Thursday morning.
The system can detect significant earthquakes quickly and send a real-time alert to your phone before the shaking reaches you.
ShakeAlert does not predict earthquakes or how long they will last but it does offer advance warning about quakes that have already started. The system will continue to monitor the shaking until it stops. You may get more than one of these alerts if it is a large earthquake and continues to grow, said Althea Rizzo of the Oregon Office of Emergency Management.
