Editorial: Marijuana tax revenue may be up in smoke

Here is a story of unintended consequences. Deschutes County voters opted to not lift a moratorium on more marijuana grow or processing operations within the county’s borders. Because of that moratorium, the county cannot collect any tax money on current operations now in place or in the future. A county only receives the money if it allows all licensed recreational marijuana activity to take place within the county, according to Mark Pettinger, a spokesman for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission in a story by Bulletin reporter Brenna Visser. “When Deschutes County Commissioners voted to put a ban on allowing further licensed marijuana production that essentially became the point in time which the count(y) was no longer eligible to receive its portion of the 17% state tax collected at point of sale,” Pettinger said in an email. “Even though existing producers are allowed to continue production, and even though retail activity takes place in Deschutes County.â

OLCC Prepares for Legislative Action on Takeout Cocktails Lawmakers will work next week to extend the eviction moratorium and limit schools’ liability. A third bill would boost struggling restaurants. Two Wrongs. (Christine Dong) Updated December 18, 2020 At its monthly meeting Dec. 17, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission signaled readiness to move rapidly on takeout cocktails if lawmakers make them legal in the special legislative session scheduled for Dec. 21. The heavy lifting at that session will involve two policy bills: one that extends the current eviction moratorium until June 30 and provides compensation for landlords and rental assistance for tenants; and another that limits liability claims related to COVID-19 for schools and community colleges.

Pamplin Media Group - No penalty for Hillsboro bar owner offering dine-in service

Spaghetti Western in Hillsboro and Last Lap in Cornelius have disregarded rules prohibiting dine-in service. A restaurant in Hillsboro and another in Cornelius have disregarded recently implemented state restrictions barring dine-in service while not enforcing mask-wearing requirements, officials say. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission and Washington County officials have both notified Alan Snyder, owner of Spaghetti Western in Hillsboro and Last Lap in Cornelius, that his businesses are operating outside of permitted service guidelines. But while local law enforcement takes an education-based approach to the restrictions, it s unclear whether the notices alone will compel the restaurants to stop serving people inside. Indoor restaurant service is widely considered one of the easiest ways for coronavirus transmission to take place.

Tainted vapes recalled as Oregon regulators plan wider ban

The vape pen and pod-product category (shown above) has evolved faster than regulators ever imagined. (David Downs/Leafly) Oregon cannabis consumers would be wise to avoid legal vapes labeled with vague ingredients like “natural flavor,” at least until April. That “natural flavor” can actually be a skin moisturizer ingredient derived from shark liver oil a substance called squalane, or squalene. Burning it could give you a lung injury. This Thursday, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission will move to ban the cosmetics ingredients squalane and squalene from entering the legal marijuana vape market and, subsequently, consumers’ lungs. The ban would take effect immediately.
