Kathmandu, Apr 23 (PTI) Nepal Prime Minister and Chairman of the ruling CPN-UML K P Sharma Oli on Friday reconstituted the Standing Committee, the highest decision-making body of the party, excluding leaders close to his rivals Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal, further widening the intra-party rift.
The decision to reconstitute the party s highest body comes a day after Oli held a one-to-one meeting with senior leader Nepal on Thursday.

Politics in Nepal took a dramatic turn following two significant decisions made by the Supreme Court on February 23 and March 7, 2021. The first verdict overturned Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s decision to dissolve the House of Representatives (lower house). The second verdict invalidated the registration of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP).
Challenge to Oli
The first verdict reinstating Parliament cast a slur on the Prime Minister who, without respecting the letter and spirit of the 2015 Constitution, dissolved the lower house and called for a general election to be held, which was an irony given the huge majority in his favour. Mr. Oli, in fact, wanted to marginalise his party detractors, especially Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda)

Nepal s Election Commission on Tuesday asked the CPN (UML) led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the CPN (Maoist Centre) led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda to come up with a new name and election symbol of the party if they decide to merge their parties again, days after the Supreme Court quashed the 2018 unification of the two parties.

During a meeting of the top election body on Tuesday, it was decided to uphold the apex court s verdict and scrap the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) with the registration number 145 in its record, My Republica newspaper reported.
