Despite the world pandemic, Santa will still be bringing joy to families across the globe. NORAD is continuing its tradition of tracking the jolly man on his yearly flight.
The tradition began in 1955 when a newspaper advertised that kids could call Santa directly, only for the number to be misprinted. The number rang through to the crew commander on duty at the time, U.S. Air Force Colonel Harry Shoup, at the Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center, the predecessor to NORAD.
According to the news release, Col. Shoup was quick to realize a mistake had been made and assured the child he was Santa. Shoup then assigned a duty officer to continue answering calls. Thus, a holiday tradition was born, which NORAD has carried on since it was created in 1958.
