What is new is how quickly malicious actors can spread disinformation when the world is tightly connected across social networks and internet news sites. We can give up on the problem and rely on the platforms themselves to fact-check stories or posts and screen out disinformation or we can build new tools to help people identify disinformation as soon as it crosses their screens. Preslav Nakov is a computer scientist at the Qatar Computing Research Institute in Doha specializing in speech and language processing. He leads a project using machine learning to assess the reliability of media sources. That allows his team to gather news articles alongside signals about their trustworthiness and political biases, all in a Google News-like format.

The Peninsula Minister of Transport and Communications H E Jassim Al Sulaiti has said that the State of Qatar pays great attention to enhancing the positive side of using innovative technology and has made remarkable strides in digital transformation and in developing its ICT sector. “Qatar has also adopted multiple initiatives to boost research, development and increasing its competitiveness and to keep pace with latest digital skills,” the Minister said while taking part in High-Level UN General Assembly Thematic Debate on Digital Cooperation & Connectivity which was held virtually.

QCRI’s Creative Space honours winners of python competition  25 Apr 2021 - 9:48 Students during the online programme. The Peninsula Doha: Creative Space, part of the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) under Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), has announced the winners of its Python Programming Competition, which challenged 90 middle and high school students to put their coding skills to the test. The students learned the coding language during a 30-hour online program offered by QCRI over the course of the current academic year. The participants comprised two groups of students from international schools and five groups from 11 Ministry of Education schools. The successful program concluded with the Python Competition held on April 10, challenging the students to program a Tic-Tac-Toe game using Python. With the option of competing individually or in teams of two, the students submitted their programs with a video to demonstrate their understanding.
