BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced Thursday the state will be putting an emphasis on working towards getting vaccines to teachers and school staff.
Those at Red Cedar Elementary they say they are excited for the opportunity.
“I think teachers are excited about the opportunity for a vaccine,” Red Cedar nurse Bethany Byrne said.
Every day she discusses the possibility of a vaccine with her coworkers.

In fall 2020, parents found new ways to help their children learn amid uncertain school-district plans for school re-openings. The defining feature of the new education landscape emerging from the pandemic is that many families are no longer waiting for school-district solutions, and are giving themselves permission to choose how and where their children learn when assigned schools are closed, including finding or creating new learning opportunities.

A new variant of the coronavirus has emerged in the United States, posing yet another public health challenge in a country already losing more than 3000 people to COVID-19 every day.
The mutated version of the virus, first identified in South Africa, was found in two cases in South Carolina.
Public health officials said itâs almost certain that there are more infections that have not been identified yet.

They are also concerned that this version spreads more easily and that vaccines could be less effective against it.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WTOC) - South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster made a stop at the Hilton Head Hospital Friday afternoon to tour the hospital and see where vaccinations are being administered.
Governor McMaster says many hospitals did have a slow start with administering the vaccines, but now that things are cleared up, he’s happy to see how hospitals are utilizing their supplies.
Governor McMaster says hospitals, like Hilton Head Hospital, are getting doses in and it’s not even taking a week for them to run out. He says each week new shipments are coming into those hospitals. McMaster says no vaccines are being wasted.
