It’s time to pursue a reinvestment in systemwide student-based advocacy that has secured profound investments in UC students Isuru Karunatillaka /The Highlander Over the past fifty years, the UC Student Association has represented students across the University of California to the Board of Regents, the UC Office of the President, the Governor and state elected officials and has even made power moves as a leading force of federal advocacy in Washington, D.C. alongside the United States Student Association. Today, the UC Student Association is the official voice for over 280,000 students across ten campuses and works alongside the UC Graduate Professional Council to empower undergraduate and graduate student issues through university policy reform, government relations through lobbying and campus action through student activism.

Calls to change funding to increase faculty diversity at California Community Colleges

A prominent state lawmaker, advocates and a faculty association are calling for changes in how California funds efforts to bring diversity to community college faculties across the state. “There does need to be a fix to this issue,” Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager, D-Los Angeles, vice chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus, said in a statement. She is also a former trustee of the Los Angeles Community College District.  The calls came in response to an EdSource investigation published Monday that revealed how an arcane state law fails to adequately fund efforts to increase the diversity of the community colleges faculty which is largely white while the student body is richly diverse.

Cypress College student Cueva selected for inaugural #RealCollege Student Leadership Advisory Council

Cypress College student Catherine Cueva is one of 23 students nationwide selected as the inaugural cohort of #RealCollege’s Student Leadership Advisory Council. Cueva is the only member from the California Community Colleges and just one of four from the Golden State. California’s additional selections come from Fresno State University, California Polytechnic State University at Pomona, and the University of California Berkeley. In all, the 23 students attend 19 public institutions, eight community colleges, and four Historically Black Colleges and Universities.Three-quarters of the SLAC members identify as female and 87% are people of color. Cueva said she joined the Student Leadership Advisory Council “to help inform others about food insecurity, expecially on college campuses.” Her interest is an extension of her volunteer efforts providing Thanksgiving meals to those in need.

Sierra College Tapped for New Statewide Initiative to Catalyze Innovation and Invention to Solve Social Challenges Share Article Sierra College announced today that it has joined the California Community College Chancellor’s Office to launch a bold initiative to encourage, harness, and develop the inventive talents of communities across the State. The goal of the Invention and Inclusive Innovation (I³) initiative is to catalyze innovation and invention to solve social problems that existed before COVID-19 and those that have been created or amplified by the pandemic. Sierra College “The Invention and Inclusion Innovation (I³) initiative will empower students from diverse backgrounds who might not see themselves in an entrepreneurial role and prepare them for an evolving and innovative future,” said Sierra College Superintendent/President Willy Duncan.
