In California, Governor Gavin Newsom tapped Secretary of State Alex Padilla today to fill out the U.S. Senate term of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Padilla oversaw the state s November election, an election with record turnout, and he will be the first Latino to represent California in the U.S. Senate. Scott Shafer of member station KQED in San Francisco joins us.
Hey there, Scott.
KELLY: Tell us a little bit more about Padilla and the significance of his selection.
SHAFER: Sure. Well, you know, California is about 40% Latino, so picking Alex Padilla as the first Latino to represent the state in the Senate is emotionally powerful as well as historic. And about his background - he s 47 years old. His parents were both born in Mexico, although they met in Los Angeles, where Padilla grew up. His immigrant parents were working-class. His dad worked as a cook. His mom cleaned houses.

Gun Rights Groups Challenge California’s One-Gun-Per-Month Restriction
U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- A coalition of gun rights organizations including the Second Amendment Foundation and Firearms Policy Coalition, Inc. are asking a federal court in California for an injunction against enforcement of the state’s one-gun-per-month restriction on the grounds that it violates the Second Amendment.
Joining SAF and FPC are the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC, North County Shooting Center, Inc., PWGG, L.P., a California Limited Partnership, and six private citizens, Michelle Nguyen, Dominic Boguski, Jay Medina, Frank Colletti, John Phillips and Darin Prince, according to the court document obtained by AmmoLand News.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) California Gov. Gavin Newsom selected Secretary of State Alex Padilla on Tuesday as the state’s next U.S. senator, a historic pick that sends a Latino to the Senate for the first time in the state’s history.

Sacramento: California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Secretary of State Alex Padilla on Tuesday, local time, as the state s next US senator to fill the seat being vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
The child of Mexican immigrants, Padilla will be Californiaâs first Latino senator, giving a new level of representation to the demographic group that makes up nearly 40 per cent of the state s population.
âThrough his tenacity, integrity, smarts and grit, California is gaining a tested fighter in their corner who will be a fierce ally in DC, lifting up our stateâs values and making sure we secure the critical resources to emerge stronger from this pandemic, Newsom said in a statement.
