Corning s Market St closed to traffic in 2020, what locals want now

The Leader CORNING - If the court of public opinion is any indication, residents of the Corning area would like to see Market Street open to pedestrians (and close to traffic) at some point this summer - but some businesses aren t so quick to agree. An online petition titled Bring back pedestrian friendly Market Street, asking the city to revive the 2020 plan, has received almost 3,000 e-signatures.  The petition cites a multitude of factors for the pedestrian-friendly street being a good idea, including safe outdoor spaces due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, additional space for certain businesses, and adding to the experience of Corning.

Market Street Brewing Company, Volo Bar set to reopen with COVID rules

The Leader CORNING - Restaurants and bars on Market Street are reemerging after temporarily closing this past winter due to the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic, and a new brewery location will open on the historic main street in mid-to-late May.  The Market Street Brewing Company, Hand + Foot and Volo Bar & Lounge recently reopened and Iron Flamingo Brewery, located on Baker Street, will roll out a new Barrell House, at 54 W. Market St., in late spring.  “I’d like to think that will all of the vaccinations that are happening, even though it is still important to have social distancing and to wear a mask, I think people are feeling more comfortable getting out and doing more personal shopping, dining and exploring,” said Coleen Fabrizi, executive director of the Corning Gaffer District.

Corning Gaffer District businesses can get grants to cover COVID costs

The Leader CORNING - Tom Freeman, owner of Treats on Market Street, is one of many Gaffer District business owners seeking a one-time grant of up to $1,000 for pandemic recovery and business model adjustments. “The grant, if we receive it, will be very helpful,” Freeman said. “It’s going to allow us to upgrade our point of sale to a contact list, which will also allow us to start offering online ordering.” The new $100,000 matching grant opportunity for businesses within the Gaffer District is funded by donations from Corning Enterprises and Corning Credit Union, according to Gaffer District Executive Director Coleen Fabrizi.
