MOULTRIE, Ga. â The Colquitt County Board of Commissioners quietly approved a $23.24 million budget at its Tuesday work session.
The vote came after more than a month of budget hearings in which each department head presented the case for his requested budget.
The budget, which will take effect July 1, is $441,199 more than the current fiscal yearâs budget, an increase of about 1.8%. County Administrator Chas Cannon said most of the difference is capital equipment, including a truck for the Tax Assessors Office, another for the county Extension agent, a planned upgrade to internet bandwidth, and service agreements for the ambulance service that cover the next six years.Â

MOULTRIE, Ga. â On February 10, 2021, Shirley Margaret Tucker Asbell passed away at Colquitt Regional Medical Center. She was known throughout Colquitt County as a loving mother, avid church goer and the county clerk of Superior Court for many years.Â
She is survived by her children Vickie Birchfield and Patti Walters as well as Asbellâs grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Â
Birchfield lamented, âShe was loving, supportive, and just loves the Lord with all her heart.âÂ

MOULTRIE, Ga. â A Pavo woman was charged with vehicular homicide last week in connection with an Oct. 18 automobile crash that killed a Norman Park woman.
Jennifer Mojica, 24, was arrested Feb. 11 by the Thomas County Sheriffâs Office. In addition to the charge of vehicular homicide in the first degree, Mojica was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to drive in a single lane and driving on the wrong side of the road.
According to a Georgia State Patrol report released about three weeks after the crash, Mojica was driving south on Old Norman Park Road and Mary Angelic Noble, 46, was traveling north. Mojica entered the northbound lane and struck Nobleâs vehicle in the right side, the GSP said. Mojicaâs vehicle then ran off the road and overturned into a ditch.
