As we all know, water is a scarce resource. It is even predicted that by 2025, half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas, a situation that has a very high potential of erupting extreme poverty across the world.
The Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) (2017/18) indicates that access to basic drinking water in the Northern Region stands at 50%, nonetheless, there is increasing demand by households, agriculture and industry, and the impacts of climate change have also contributed to putting water under extreme threat.

In my article last week titled, ‘Prince Philip Goes Home & Culture,’ I wrote on how expensive, wasteful, time-consuming and complicated Ghanaian funerals are, as against the simple funeral of Prince Philip in the UK.
His burial a week after his death is unheard of in Ghana, except in the Moslem community where, depending on the time of death, one is buried either on the same day or the next day.
While generally resonating with me on the need for drastic changes in our expensive/time-consuming funerals, readers asked, who will initiate this deeply-rooted change of handling the dead in Ghana? “Who will bell the cat?”

A few weeks ago, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, ordered individuals and companies engaged in prospecting in forest reserves with or without legal authorisation to stop.
He further directed the Minerals Commission to immediately suspend acceptance, processing or recommending the grant, including renewal or extension of reconnaissance and prospecting licences in Forest Reserves.
The Minister’s decision follows the revelation that a number of individuals and companies unlawfully acquire licences under the pretext of undertaking reconnaissance or prospecting in Forest Reserves and yet proceed to engage in illegal mining in such Forest Reserves, with its obvious adverse consequences on the environment.
