The high-school schedule adopted at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board this year that has been widely criticized by some parents and students will be adjusted next fall, says director Camille Williams-Taylor.
However, things won’t return to pre-pandemic high school life. And some decisions have not been made by the Ontario Ministry of Education, including whether secondary students will continue to attend in-person classes only every other day, Williams-Taylor told trustees Tuesday.

Unions representing staff at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board have asked that classes be moved online this week unless managers can explain what measures are being taken to make schools safer.
As COVID-19 cases rise in Ottawa, “there is real fear and anxiety among staff,” said a letter sent Sunday night to board director Camille Williams-Taylor from presidents of the two unions representing all the staff at the board, from teachers and other educators to custodians and administrators.

Ottawa’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vera Etches has a reassuring message for Ottawa parents, students and staff worried about the safety of schools as the rate of COVID-19 rises sharply in the city.
Transmission of the virus at schools is low, Etches maintains. Students usually contract the virus at home or in the community, from soccer games to barbecues.

Etches met with administrators from all four Ottawa school boards Monday, and plans to attend a virtual meeting of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board on Tuesday night to answer questions.

Officials at Ottawa’s largest school board say they hope to make changes as early as June to the pandemic high school schedule that many students and their parents say is causing academic overload and stress.
More than 1,900 people have signed a petition and 83 people signed an open letter to the board asking for changes to the quadmester scheduling and a return to full-time classes for secondary students as soon as possible at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.
