Funding to offset lost revenue from cancelled fall fairs, exhibits

The Ontario government is providing $5 million to support the province’s Agricultural and Horticultural Societies impacted by the pandemic, with funding flowing through the Agricultural and Horticultural Support and Recovery Funding Initiative.
“Agricultural and horticultural societies play a vital role in agricultural education while making significant contributions to the economy of rural Ontario,” said Ernie Hardeman, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, who made the announcement at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association annual general meeting on Tuesday. “This funding will help support these societies during a difficult period so they can operate future fall fairs and exhibits and participate in our future economic recovery.”

Belleville city officials say the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) conference held earlier this week was a good opportunity to connect with 1,100 rural municipal counterparts across the province and bone up on local government trends.

The Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) annual conference was held virtually this year due to the pandemic, where various levels of government attending for speeches, delegations and workshops.
From January 25 to January 26, more than 1,100 participants from rural areas in Ontario, municipalities, organizations, as well as provincial and federal governments joined the 2021 conference.
The theme for the ROMA conference this year was ROMA: Connecting Rural Ontario. This year’s conference was the first virtual ROMA meeting since the pandemic began.
Several topics discussed in the conference between provincial and municipal representatives included the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, municipal insurance, long-term care, economic recovery, public health, mental health resources, childcare, and broadband.

It doesn’t look like the north is being forgotten about in the province’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout.
Danny Whalen, president of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM), says he voiced his concern to Ontario cabinet ministers during this week’s Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) conference about northern vaccine distribution.
The same day of the conference, northern health units received their first shipments of the Moderna vaccine.
“We’re very pleased with the fact we’re receiving the vaccines on the same schedule of southern Ontario,” Whalen said. “So far, we’re on par.”

Haliburton County and its lower-tier municipalities will collectively receive about $645,000 in further infrastructure funding through the province’s Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund.
Premier Doug Ford announced $200 million in new OCIF money for Ontario’s rural municipalities during the annual Rural Ontario Municipal Association conference on Jan. 25. Like so many events amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the ROMA conference, which took place Jan. 24 through 26, was held using a virtual format, with municipal politicians, staffers and keynote speakers participating remotely. Normally the annual event takes place at a hotel in Toronto.
