Southeast Ohio man sideswipes SUV, causes crash with deputy s cruiser

Nancy Molnar Times-Reporter staff writer Dover NEWCOMERSTOWN A man from Southeast Ohio who reportedly caused two crashes on U.S. Route 36 Friday evening is facing possible felony charges for failure to comply with a signal of a peace officer, resisting arrest and assault. He is also to be charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, driving with a suspended license and several other traffic violations. The second crash damaged a Tuscarawas County Sheriff s Office cruiser. The first damaged a sport-utility vehicle driven by a Uhrichsville woman. Sgt. Phil Valdez of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff s Office started following the 51-year-old motorist from Vincent, Ohio, after being told about a possible drunk driver at the Tony Mart in Port Washington, according to a report.

Dover-New Philadelphia Kiwanis Club marks 100 years

The Dover-New Philadelphia Kiwanis Club will celebrate its 100th year of service to the community in 2021 by launching a project to provide new playground equipment for Deis Hill Park in Dover. There are four shelters up there that have playground equipment from the 1960s, said the organization s president. Steve Handley. We are going to seek donations from the public and grants for that. Cost of the project is around $15,000. Checks can be made to the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation at P.O. Box 103, New Philadelphia, OH 44663. Donations are tax deductible. In the future, the club plans to fund a similar project in New Philadelphia. 

Tuscarawas Library System to offer health, financial programs

Tuscarawas Library System to offer health, financial programs The Times-Reporter The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will offer health and financial programs this January and February virtually via Zoom.  Master Your Money: Checking & Understanding Your Credit Report will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 14 and 10:30 a.m. Feb. 9. It is a step-by-step program that helps participants check their credit report, provides a complete breakdown of credit reports and gives instructions on disputing any errors. It will be offered in partnership with DoverPhila Federal Credit Union. Lauren Odenkirk, dietician with Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital, will present a program about healthy eating in Nutrition: Back to Basics at 6 p.m. Jan. 20.

Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign raises $150,000

NEW PHILADELPHIA As it has done in the past two years, the Dover/New Philadelphia Salvation Army exceeded its goal in its annual Red Kettle Campaign this Christmas. The local organization collected $150,816.23 during the 2020 campaign, according to Lt. Andrew Allen, who commands the local citadel with his wife, Lt. Amanda Allen. The goal was $140,000. We definitely exceeded it. It s a big deal considering the year we re living and the circumstances surrounding our campaign, Allen said. All of the money raised stays in Tuscarawas County. It is used to fund programs for area youth and to assist families in need. He thanked the community for its support, and praised volunteers who rang bells at area stores. 

Nic Brown talks about recovery from COVID-19

NEW PHILADELPHIA Nic Brown, the first person diagnosed with COVID-19 in Tuscarawas County, has made a nearly complete recovery after undergoing a near fatal bout with the virus last March. Brown has returned to his job in the IT department at the East Central Ohio Educational Service Center in New Philadelphia, though he still suffers from occasional headaches. The recovery took a little longer than I expected, he said. As he recovered at home from the virus, he had to deal with headaches and fatigue. I still actually get headaches from time to time, said Brown, who is married and the father of three children. They ll last anywhere from a couple of hours to three days. Other than that the fatigue has pretty much gone away, and I m back to doing what I do.
