The purpose of the commission is to create an institutional space of self-determination for migrants, associations, and those working to assist them.
After years in the making, 20 associations involved in the commission took part in the body s first meeting on Thursday along with councillor in charge of immigration, Marco Gaudini.

Migrants who embark on the highly dangerous journey accross the Mediterranean Sea do so in the hope of being rescued by a humanitarian aid vessel or by coast guards who will bring them to a European country.
Although landings occur in Malta, Cyprus and Spain, Italy remains the country where the most ships come ashore after a rescue. In 2020, the number of migrants arriving by sea in Italy exceeded 34,000, mainly on the islands of Lampedusa and Sicily and in the toe of Italy, Calabria.

Fifteen people were jailed and nine were put on house arrest by police in southern Italy. They allegedly belonged to two organizations that sold stay permits to people living abroad.
Police in Crotone, southern Italy, carried out an operation dubbed Ikaros against alleged asylum fraudsters on Wednesday. A total of 24 suspects were arrested. The charges against them include association to commit a crime aimed at favoring illegal immigration, forgery, influence peddling, and corruption.
Attorneys, police officers among suspects
Among the suspects are four attorneys, an employee of the prefect s office working for the territorial commission for asylum seekers, a traffic cop, and two police officers from the Crotone police station. Fifteen of the suspects were sent to jail, while nine were put on house arrest.

Italian authorities arrested three people smugglers on Monday, February 15, as part of an investigation sparked after about 100 migrants were found the previous night, in an area north of the city of Udine.
Three people were arrested on Monday, February 15 by Italian police for aiding and abetting illegal migration after about 100 undocumented migrants were found in the country s northeastern Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
Those found included 11 women of different nationalities.The investigation was coordinated by the local prosecutor s office and it became clear during it that the three alleged people smugglers had already planned another trip to bring numerous asylum seekers into Italian territory.
