MDARD grants will help animal shelters, new pet adopters | News, Sports, Jobs

Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development LANSING The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2021 Animal Welfare Fund grants. This year, MDARD will distribute $137,144 to 24 registered animal shelters throughout the state to support various animal welfare projects. The Animal Welfare Fund is supported by generous Michiganders during tax season when they check the fund’s box on Form 4642, Voluntary Contributions Schedule on their state tax returns. Since 2010, MDARD has distributed more than $1.4 million to over 213 local animal shelters. 100% of the contributions made to this fund go directly to these shelters to support efforts that increase sterilization rates among dogs and cats prior to adoption, provide anti-cruelty training for animal law enforcement agencies, offer proper animal care programs to the public, and assist shelters with the unreimbursed costs of care for animals involved in l

The Story of A Lost Dog: Milo, The English Springer Spaniel | 106 1 The Breeze

Feb 25, 2021 Milo, a dog from Kent County Michigan, was missing from his family for 43 days. 43 days in the cold winter! The local animal shelter that said the dog had been last spotted in early February, but the case remained cold for nearly two weeks. It was nearly 20 miles away from his family that residents in the town of Sand Lake kept hearing a dog bark over the course of a few days. Then they looked around and found Milo stuck in a grain silo, all the way down. The pooch lost 33 pounds and was suffering from the blistering cold, but somehow survived. Missing Kent County Dog Found In Grain Silo After being trapped in a grain silo, Milo was finally re-united with his family.  I say finally because this adorable Springer Spaniel had been missing for over a month.  43 days to be exact.  The way he was found is heartbreaking. Animal Control officers responded to a call of a possible dog stranded in a silo in Sand Lake, MI last Sunday morning according to the Kent County Animal Shelter, The dog had been heard barking for a few days per town residents. Our caller had investigated the area and believed him to be stuck under a silo so contacted Animal Control for assistance.
