Community Foundation awards $106K in new grants | News, Sports, Jobs

Mar 16, 2021 Courtesy Photo Alcona Historical Society received a $2,972 Community Impact Grant for the Sprucing Up Bailey School project. ALPENA The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan recently awarded a new round of community grants covering a four-county area that includes Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle counties. The CFNEM Board of Trustees recently approved 46 new grants totaling $106,515. Of that amount, $84,289 was awarded in Community Impact Grants, and $22,226 was awarded in grants from the Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council. New Community Impact Grants are: ¯ Alcona Community Schools $1,000 for the Alcona Wrestling program; ¯ Alcona Community Schools $3,000 for the Elementary School Outdoor Classroom; ¯ Alcona County Commission on Aging $1,500 for the Alcona County Commission on Aging Technology Loan Center;

The library is pleased to welcome Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha for a virtual visit to Alpena at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6 to discuss her book “What the Eyes Don’t See,” a powerful first-hand account of the Flint water crisis, the signature environmental disaster of our time, and a riveting narrative of personal advocacy. Selected as the 2019-20 Great Michigan Read title, “What the Eyes Don’t See” is also the story of how science and determination helped expose the severity of the situation, forcing the government to address the damage being done to the residents of Flint.

Alpena library to host tween book club | News, Sports, Jobs

Feb 22, 2021 ALPENA ­– The Alpena County Library is hosting an In BeTween Book Club at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 21. Readers ages 9 – 11 are invited to sign up for the upcoming February/March In BeTween Book Club featuring “BenBee and the Teacher Griefer: The Kids Under the Stairs,” by K.A. Holt. Registration is available on the library website and Facebook page. Registered participants will receive a book club kit in advance of the meeting, which includes: – 1 copy of the book – 1 set of discussion questions – 1 bookmark – 1 activity or craft Participants will be contacted via email to pick up their book club kit, which will include a copy of the book to keep, discussion questions, a bookmark featuring similar books to check out, and an activity/craft.
